The Geekettes.

In February I met up with Jess and Denise - founders of the amazing Geekettes movement to connect women in tech - to take their portrait. They have been super successful in Berlin and Germany and are currently expanding the Geekettes all over the world. Cheers girls, and congratulations!

Life lately. 8+9/52.

And another two busy weeks have passed by in a twinkle. I took a little time out after some crazy weeks of work but got knocked down by a terrible flu and am still not back in shape all the way. You know taking care of a crazy toddler doesn't really give you the chance to recover when sick. Argh.

My mom sponsored mini-me and I a pricy flight to come visit the family over the weekend, to recover and to introduce mini-me to karneval (though he only wore his supercute lady bug costume for about five minutes and wasn't all that into it...). Today is the first day I finally feel significantly better (but still quite far from good). I really hope I will be back on track within the next few days and am so happy that mini-me's immune system seems to fight more efficient than mine these days. I have a lot of recent work and some features in the pipe and am excited to share over the course of the week. Happy tuesday and you all stay healthy, please!

Oh you.

Dear Mini-me,

the apartment is a mess. I have been working too much too late lately and I don't even care. It's a charming chaos. The laundry piles up and in the mornings I get worried not to find anything clean to dress you with. When I pick you up from daycare, you smile and wink at me. Instead of leaving, you invite me to join in the fun. Jump in the ball bath, crawl in the box or climb on the slide. To any question I ask you, you say yes, nod, and twinkle, again. When we pass the playground on the way home but don't stop, you start grouching loudly, kicking my butt from behind. When you are on top of the slide, ready to throw yourself down, you wink at me again. Reassuring yourself that I see how grown up you are, already. And I see it. Damn.

While taking my shower in the morning, you try to climb into the tub. You pull the curtain to the side and we echo each other's "heeeelllooooo". Back and forth. You babble all day. Sometimes, when I pause when reading your bedtime story, you just continue narrating in Chinese. You have started to copy the lullabies I sing to you. You clap and cheer me on. Sometimes my eyes get watery, because I just can't bare how fast you grow. While I wait until you fall asleep, you twinkle to check if am still there, looking at you. In the mornings, when I am still asleep, you sit down on my face to make sure that I don't sleep while you are awake. I might miss something. And you are right.

Mini-me, I love you so.

40 Days of Eating. (#19 - Osmans Töchter)

One of the things that kept me busy lately was shooting three stories for Mit Vergnügen. They started a series where the twins Maria and Sophia go out for dinner (or lunch) every night for 40 days in a row all over Berlin - called 40 DAYS OF EATING and inspired by the fabulous and addictive 40 DAYS OF DATING. They get a photographer send along and an address and eat (and drink!) as much as they can, later each answering a questionnaire about the taste, the overall experience and what they learned new about the other twin that day.

I had three lovely nights out in great restaurants with spectacular food, got drunk out of my mind, had great conversation and took some intimate shots of these beautiful and smart ladies.

On my night #1 (and their night #19!) we went to a very cozy Turkish place called "Osmans Töchter" on Pappelalle in Prenzlauer Berg. It was one of those really really cold nights in January where feet and hands froze immediately when steping on the streets of Berlin, and when entering the restaurant, I was welcomed with hot tea and a seat by the heater (thanks!). We drank two bottles of Raki and learned about the Turkish drinking culture, ate almost everything the menu had to offer (I highly recommend the meze and the baked eggplant with cheese!) and when the night continued after desert, the lovely owner Arzu started to read the future from our coffee grounds.

A dinner to remember for sure and if Arzu's predictions will turn out to be true, we all have a bright and shiny future ahead of us. Thank you Mit Vergnügen, Osmans Töchter and Maria and Sophia for the fantastic night. Read the official story with my photos >>HERE<<. 11 days later I went to Lava in Neukölln, but that's another story to be told.

Life lately. 7/52

I have been working so much day and night that I am close to a migraine attack, so next week I will take it very slow and easy. What a bliss I had a lovely visitor to cheer up the moods and share the chores last week.

Besides my crazy work-load, we spent the days with cuddles, laughter, healthy cooking sessions, late night wine and tons of chocolate. Had a heart-shaped banana-cake for Valentine's and spent the afternoons on the playground enjoying the pleasant weather. And we fell for Lily all over again. It felt so right to have her around, and it was so hard to let her go again on monday. We all cried big tears and Lily, we miss you so. Thank you for being brilliant. ♥

Life lately 5+6/52.

We were out of town last week, so apologies for not sticking to the life lately schedule. It's tuesday once again and I decided to combine the pictures of the past two weeks.

We are trooping life "alone", cuddling up, cooking feel good food, going on long walks (and yes I am working full time at the same time) and inviting friends over to cheer up the moods. Anton's favourite person, Lily Poppins, arrived on sunday for a week long Berlin stopover between Recife and Madrid and we couldn't be happier, period. Our apartment is full of squeeks and laughter. To a great week!

Life lately. 4/52

This week I left my Kiez a couple of times, visited some dear friends in Potsdam, got my hair cut, had great food (>>more here<<) and did some wonderful jobs. I love the weather, even though mini-me contaminated me with another cold. Life is good. But I miss N., who left us lonesome here for a few weeks. My props go out to all single parents out there. You are the true heroes of humanity.

Life lately. 3/52

I am happy to announce I am a proud owner of the new iPhone 5s since a few days and am impressed by just how much better its camera is.

There was ice and snow this week, temperatures are declining and I am actually loving it. Besides that, it's no words, just pictures.

Pregnancy Essentials.

schwangerschaft

Upon multiple requests, I want to give a small insight into what helped me through my pregnancy with mini-me. I will do a little (!) series of mama content, because suddenly I know a lot of people who are pregnant and why not answer all your questions here at once. Next week I'll try to write a post on travelling with a newborn, something a lot of people seem to consider me a pro in.

- H&M Maternity Jeans: I found these to be super comfortable and perfectly adjusting to the different stages of belly size. They looked great at 12 and at 38 weeks (that's as far as I got in weeks, as mini-me arrived two weeks early), plus they are great value for money at around 20-30 Euros. I wore these even post-partum, because they were just really pretty and comfortable aaaand they covered my not so pretty belly while nursing.

- Mama Mio Tummy Rub: I saw a crazy girl raving about this in a youtube video and shoot, I got hooked! I basically tried every lotion for my belly during pregnancy, first because, like every preggo, I was scared of stretch-marks, and second because my skin in that area was super itchy at the time. This stuff is a bit pricy, but my girls got it for me for my birthday and I loved it. The smell is nice but not 100% me - BUT it lasts really long (I still have left-overs and used it every day for three months), moisturizes very deep and feels amazing on the bump. I would definately invest in it again. And yay, I didn't get any stretchmarks! I also recommend Dove firming body lotion as a drug store alternative, I loved the smell while I was pregnant and it was one of the few lotions that kept me moisturized for more than a couple of hours.

- A Sports Bra: Everyone told me to buy nursing bras when I was pregnant, but that's complete bullshit - first of all you definately have NO idea of the size of your boobs after birth when you are pregnant and second because they were all weirdly shaped and uncomfortable and itchy. I actually found the perfect one where I least expected it - at C&A. It's a simple microfibre sports bra and cost around 10 Euros. I loved it so much that I bought it three different colors and I actually prefered these to any nursing bra even after birth and still wear them when I work out.

- Pregnancy Yoga: I had never really done yoga before I was about half way through my pregnancy. Right after my pregnancy test I was super motivated and went jogging like every other day (for what... two weeks?), but then I gained weight and the belly grew and I stopped because it didn't feel right anymore. Yoga saved me, it was not as intense but still made me sweat and additionally gave me an ultimate calmness of mind. I really enjoyed the course I did with a midwife, but I would definately recommend to do this in a real yoga studio or a gym, because it will be more of a workout and less chanting and all. Though chanting still calms mini-me when iffy, I think he heard me back then and enjoyed it. Another advice is (for Germans), ask your health insurance if they cover the course, they might (mine did, but only after I asked them!).

- Acupuncture: I had a quite easy pregnancy (but hence a terrible birth...) with no morning sickness, no breakouts, a manageable weight gain and I felt pretty fit until the moment my water broke (and even afterwards, because I had no signs of labour until induced by a terrible thing called castor oil mixed with mango juice, phew!). The only really annoying and almost permanent ache I had was around three or two months before my due date, when my ischiatic nerve started to hurt (not so so bad, but permanently... an ugly pain going down from your back into one of your legs). My midwife recommended acupuncture (and guess what, my health insurance covered, again!). I didn't really believe in the needle magic, but it helped instantly and permanently. After a few sessions my pain was gone for good. I am now a firm believer in these needles!

- A Nursing Pillow: I thought these were money-makers and of no use before my belly grew very big and I was not able to sleep anymore, because that huge thing was in the way, always. My boyfriend hated this pillow because after I got it, it was more important than him: it was my best friend, life saver, just amazing. It hugged me from all sides and gave brilliant support - I just really loved it. This was pricy and I recommend to buy a large-sized and not too cheap one: it's worth it. I used it until the last day of pregnancy, then during nursing (and sleeping, still!) and now we use it to soften mini-me's toddler bed on the side where he can climb out, so he doesn't hurt himself on the hard wood when partying all night long. He loves it, too.

- Magnesium Phosphoricum a.k.a. the "Hot Seven": I tend to get migranes a few times a year, especially when short on sleep or super stressed. Usually nothing helps except of the really hard stuff you only get in small doses, but while I was pregnant I couldn't take those. This was recommended to me during a harsh migrane in the early weeks and I love it until today: It's homeopathic pills (Schüßler Salt #7) that you throw in hot water and drink them slowly. This worked really well for me and instantly made me drowsy whenever I couldn't sleep because of aches or pain. I still use it instead of aspirine or paracetamol, it's amazing.
